Meta AI Is Invading Your WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Chats

The AI can respond to questions, create pictures, or team you up with Snoop Dogg in a D&D adventure.

You can now ask for early access to Meta AI, a smart computer program that lives inside Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. This AI uses Llama 2 technology to answer questions and can make pictures using the Emu model. Meta is also offering different AI characters that have special jobs. These characters are based on 28 famous people. For example, Snoop Dogg acts as a dungeon master when you want, Roy Choi's character gives cooking tips, and Naomi Osaka's character is all about anime.

Meta AI is a bit like ChatGPT, Midjourney, or Stable Diffusion. It learned from lots of text and can chat back to you. To talk to this AI, just type "@Meta" in your chat on Facebook Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp. The Meta account will show up on your screen, kind of like when you chat with a friend. Click on the Meta account, and you'll see a menu with different AI characters to choose from, including the regular Meta AI and celebs like Snoop Dogg. These AI characters also have their own accounts and names, so you can bring them directly into your chats without using "@Meta."

If you want to create an image, just type "@Meta /imagine" and tell it what you'd like to see, like "make a fancy chicken in a suit." The image-making feature is pretty cool, and it can also make custom stickers, although that part isn't fully ready yet.

A lot of people are really excited about Meta AI because it's built into three popular apps. Plus, if one person tries it in a group chat, everyone in the chat can see how it works. Meta AI can also look up stuff on the internet using Bing, so it can join in when you're talking about news, events, and things like that.

Early tests have shown that Meta's AI is well-protected with safeguards. Meta is focused on avoiding content that could be controversial, offensive, or violent. While there might be attempts to find ways to challenge this AI, it's not generating harmful content. So, it seems like Meta is off to a good start.

Similar to some other AI chatbots, Meta's AI is currently in early access and you need an invitation to use it. If you want to request an invitation, simply open Facebook Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp and type "@Meta." Then, click on the Meta account that pops up and follow the instructions on the screen to send your request. Please note that this AI feature is currently only available in English-speaking countries. Additionally, the AI celebrities feature is only accessible to users in the United States.
