Prepare for Advertisements on Amazon Prime Video

Prime Video without ads will cost an additional $3 per month.

Prepare for Advertisements on Amazon Prime Video

Starting in early 2024, Amazon Prime Video will start showing ads unless you pay an extra $3 each month. This might be disappointing for Prime members because they already pay $139 every year. But this change isn't really surprising since many other popular streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+ also charge extra if you don't want to see ads. However, Amazon has promised that the overall price of Prime membership won't go up in 2024.

The ads on Prime Video won't suddenly overwhelm you; Amazon says they will introduce them gradually. They claim they'll have "fewer ads" compared to other services, but every streaming platform says the same thing, so it's hard to say exactly what that means. The transition should be relatively smooth, even though it might be a bit frustrating.

What's interesting is that there won't be many differences between the version with ads and the one without (aside from the ads, of course). Both will let you access the same Prime Video content with high-quality 4K HDR video. That's different from some other services like Netflix, where if you have ads, you might get lower-quality video and other limitations. We checked with Amazon, and they confirmed this.

Over the past few years, Amazon has been adding more sports shows to its lineup, like "Thursday Night Football." Getting the rights to show sports can be really expensive, and this might be one of the reasons why they started offering free streaming with ads. As sports shows move away from traditional cable TV, we might see more changes in how we watch sports.

If you're a Prime member, you'll get an email about these changes sometime in late 2023 or early 2024. The email will also explain how you can pay $3 extra each month to watch Prime Video without any ads. This ad-supported version of Prime Video will first be available in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada in early 2024. People in France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Australia will start seeing ads a few months later.

If you're okay with watching some ads, you don't need to do anything. Amazon will automatically switch you to the ad-supported version when it's time, and your monthly bill won't change.
